Montréal, le lundi 21 juin 2021 - À l'avant-garde en matière d’art expérimental et numérique au Québec depuis 2007, Eastern Bloc présente, cet été, la 11e édition du Festival international d'art numérique SIGHT + SOUND. Intitulé Some Universe: Internet Spaces in a Postdigital World, le festival se déroulera, cette année, entièrement en ligne du 29 juin au 31 août. S'échelonnant sur deux mois, le public aura l'occasion de participer au grand rendez-vous annuel de Eastern Bloc et de prendre part aux réflexions de 16 artistes canadiens et étrangers.
L'exposition en ligne se tiendra sur un site spécialement conçu pour cette programmation [www.sightandsound.online]. L'accès sera gratuit, toutefois les visiteurs sont invités à faire un don pour soutenir Eastern Bloc dans son mandat, qui vise à valoriser le travail des artistes émergents. Les fonds récoltés serviront à financer les cachets des artistes lors de la prochaine édition du Festival SIGHT + SOUND, en 2022.
L'édition 2021 du Festival SIGHT + SOUND profite de l'immobilité à laquelle nous avons tous été contraints pour proposer une réflexion sur l'esthétique et la politique de l'espace et de la représentation. Commissariées par Erandy Vergara et Tina Sauerlaender, les œuvres présentées invitent à imaginer et à spéculer sur la signification réelle de l'"espace" dans un monde post-internet et post-pandémique. L'exposition invite les internautes à plonger au cœur des univers produits par des artistes contemporains, incitant à réfléchir à la nature des espaces que nous souhaitons occuper pour les années à venir.
Les commissaires Erandy Vergara et Tina Sauerlaender ont sélectionné des œuvres d'art net, des vidéos et des jeux vidéo, qui explorent des espaces au-delà des notions de perspective et de référents cartésiens. Les artistes s'éloignent du réalisme ou l'abordent de manière critique. Ils posent des questions, sans chercher à fournir des solutions linéaires. Surtout, ils tiennent virtuellement la main des visiteurs lors d'expériences immersives et multidimensionnelles afin de reconfigurer le "quatrième mur" auquel nous sommes le plus souvent soumis au quotidien face à nos écrans plats.
La 11e édition de SIGHT + SOUND sera entièrement virtuelle - donnant à Eastern Bloc l'occasion parfaite de mettre en valeur les créations vibrantes des artistes Web de son milieu. Le lundi 28 juin, les commissaires seront rejoints par les directeurs de Eastern Bloc, Alicia Turgeon et Cían Walsh, pour une discussion en direct sur Instagram (18h) autour de la thématique, des artistes et des œuvres de cette année. Le festival prendra officiellement son envol le mardi 29 juin à 19h, lorsque l'artiste torontoise Ronnie Clarke animera une performance participative Zoom où tout un chacun sera invité à explorer ses propres espaces, en offrant des indications et en lançant des appels à l'action lesquels seront publiés sur les médias sociaux de Eastern Bloc.

Les commissaires Erandy Vergara (Montréal) et Tina Sauerlaender (Berlin), qui ont déjà travaillé ensemble dans le cadre du précédent projet Critical Approaches in Virtual Reality Art, s'associent à nouveau cette année pour présenter une sélection d'œuvres qui explorent la notion d'espace sur le plan créatif et politique. Les commissaires encouragent le public du festival à profiter des dates prolongées de cette édition et à s'engager avec les œuvres à un rythme plus lent - "Nous savons que dans le contexte de la fatigue pandémique, il est difficile d'exiger une grande attention à l'écran, nous invitons donc les visiteurs à regarder une œuvre tous les deux jours", explique Vergara.
Cían Walsh, le nouveau directeur artistique de Eastern Bloc, ainsi que Alicia Turgeon, la nouvelle directrice générale du centre, estiment que malgré le passage à l'environnement virtuel, cette 11e édition n'est pas différente des précédentes: "L'organisation du festival reflète notre mandat et notre philosophie en tant que centre, ainsi que l'esprit du Festival SIGHT + SOUND, qui vise à défier et à provoquer le public avec des positions alternatives en marge des arts médiatiques. C'est un format que nous aurions pu adopter indépendamment de la pandémie. Avoir l'opportunité de présenter des œuvres de net art aussi convaincantes lors de cette édition est vraiment le point culminant pour nous dans le contexte pandémique actuel. Nous sommes très heureux de pouvoir soutenir les artistes qui créent de telles œuvres lors de cette édition du festival SIGHT + SOUND."
Dans des circonstances normales, le Festival SIGHT + SOUND serait une célébration de 5 jours, avec une exposition, des performances et des discussions publiques se déroulant à Eastern Bloc et dans d'autres lieux partenaires à travers la ville. Compte tenu de la situation pandémique actuelle, Eastern Bloc encourage le public à faire un don lors de son entrée sur le site web, afin de soutenir le centre et le net art. Le tarif suggéré pour les billets est de 8 $ pour les adultes et de 5 $ pour les étudiants. Il y aura également une fonction "pay-what-you-can" sur le site web, et tous les bénéfices serviront à financer les cachets des artistes de la prochaine édition présentielle du Festival SIGHT + SOUND, en 2022.

Montreal, June 15th, 2021- At the forefront of the experimental digital art scene in Quebec since 2007, Eastern Bloc presents the 11th edition of the SIGHT + SOUND International Digital Art Festival this summer. Titled Some Universe: Internet Spaces in a Postdigital World, this year’s festival will be held completely online between June 29th and August 31st. Running for two months, the audience will have the opportunity to participate in Eastern Bloc’s main annual event and join the reflections of 16 artists from Canada and abroad.
The online exhibition will take place on the website [www.sightandsound.online] and access will be free, however the audience will be encouraged to make a suggested donation to support Eastern Bloc’s mandate of promoting emerging artists - with all proceeds going towards funding the artist fee’s of the next edition of SIGHT + SOUND Festival, in 2022.
The 2021 edition of SIGHT + SOUND Festival takes advantage of the immobility we have all been forced into to propose a reflection about the aesthetics and politics of space and representation. Curated by Erandy Vergara and Tina Sauerlaender, the artworks help us imagine and speculate on what “space” really means in a post-internet and post-pandemic world. The exhibition invites online users to delve into the worlds produced by contemporary artists, provoking us to think about what kind of spaces we want to inhabit in the years to come.
The curators selected net art, videos, and videogames exploring spaces beyond perspective and cartesian referentes. The artists move away from realism, or engage with it critically. They ask questions, not attempting to provide linear solutions. Most of all, they virtually hold the visitors’ hands during immersive, multidimensional experiences to reconfigure the “fourth wall” to which we are mostly submitted to during our day to day lives facing flat screens.
The 11th edition of SIGHT + SOUND will be completely virtual – giving Eastern Bloc the perfect opportunity to showcase the vibrant creations of net artists across it’s milieu. On the 28th, the curators will be joined by Eastern Bloc’s directors Alicia Turgeon and Cían Walsh for a live Instagram talk (6 pm) about this years’ theme, artists and artworks. The festival officially kicks off on the evening of June 29th, when Toronto-based artist Ronnie Clarke will host a participative Zoom performance (7 pm) where everyone will be invited to explore their own spaces, offering prompts and calls-to-action which will be posted on Eastern Bloc’s social media platforms.

CURATORIAL GESTURE
Curators Erandy Vergara (Montreal) and Tina Sauerlaender (Berlin), who have already worked together in the previous project Critical Approaches in Virtual Reality Art, join forces once again this year to bring a selection of works that explore the notion of space both creatively and politically. The curators encourage the festival audience to take advantage of the longer festival dates of this edition, and engage with the works at a slower pace: “We know that in the context of pandemic fatigue, it is difficult to demand screen-attention, so we invite visitors to check one artwork every other day”, explains Vergara.
Cían Walsh, Eastern Bloc’s new Artistic Director, along with Alicia Turgeon, the centre’s newly appointed General Director, believe that despite being moved to the virtual environment, this 11th edition is no different than previous editions: “The curation of the festival reflects our mandate and ethos as a centre, and the spirit of SIGHT + SOUND Festival, aiming to challenge and provoke the audience with alternative perspectives at the fringe of media arts. This is a format we could have taken despite the pandemic. Having the opportunity to present such compelling net art in this edition is really the silver lining of the current pandemic context for us. We are really happy we can support and platform artists creating this kind of work in this edition of SIGHT + SOUND Festival.”
Under normal circumstances, SIGHT + SOUND Festival would be a 5 day celebration, with the exhibition, performances and panels taking place at Eastern Bloc and spread across the city at other partner locations. Given the current pandemic situation, Eastern Bloc encourages the audience to make a donation upon entering the website, to both support the centre and net art - with suggested ‘ticket’ prices of $8 for adults and $5 for students. There will also be a pay-what-you-can function on the website, with all proceeds going towards funding the artist fee’s of the next in-person edition of SIGHT + SOUND Festival, in 2022.
